Optional workshops

These workshops are an additional cost to conference registration. You don’t have to be registered for conference to attend either of these workshops. Each workshop is limited to 20 people. To register for either workshop, visit the conference registration page, fill out your name and select ‘next’, then on the second page select ‘I only want to purchase a workshop ticket’. If you are already registering for conference, you can add either or both workshops to your conference registration.

Hone HurihanganuiCultural competence and authentic engagement

This is a full-day workshop facilitated by Engaging Well Director Hone Hurihanganui.

Morning session – the grounding session

This is a facilitated professional conversation which explores notions of cultural competence, cultural safety and cultural intelligence, including:

  • The colonisation of Aotearoa New Zealand and its implications for now and beyond
  • Unconscious bias including structural institutional racism
  • That it is not enough to just be “not racist” – we must be “anti-racist”
  • Dismantling racism with intelligence
  • Inequity is evidence of bias
  • The most up-to-date international discourse on racism and anti-racism
  • Exploring tokenism vs authenticity
  • The Engaging Well formula/strategy for dealing with racism

Afternoon session – dismantling institutional racism

This is a natural extension of the morning session and covers the following areas:

  • Racism in Aotearoa New Zealand and how we can and must eliminate it
  • Why “being nice” will not eliminate racism
  • What can and should be done to dismantle racism organisationally
  • Exploring personal experiences of racist behaviour/praxis
  • Developing personal and professional responses to racist behaviour/praxis
  • Developing skills to pronounce Māori words and names proficiently

Rabia SiddiqueStorytelling for Leaders

Friday 2 September

Join humanitarian, author and hostage survivor Rabia Siddique for a 90-minute masterclass on Storytelling for Leaders.

This workshop will focus on how to identify, capture and share your individual stories as well as your organisation stories to impact positive cultural change, and promote stronger and more cohesive team dynamics and stakeholder relationships.

You'll leave being able to facilitate innovative, brave and outside-the-box thinking and initiatives. The workshop includes breakfast.


Evening social functions

Social night at the Redwoods Treewalk and Eastwood Café

Thursday 1 September
6pm to 9pm
Getting there - first bus departs Novotel Lakeside Hotel at 6pm, last bus at 6.45pm. 

Redwoods Treewalk from 6.15-7.30pm
Dinner at Eastwood Café from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Experience a new world from above at the Redwoods Treewalk after our first day of conference. Unwind with friends and make some new ones on this stunning suspended walk through Rotorua’s famous Redwood Forest before enjoying a relaxed dinner at nearby Eastwood Café. Return transport via shuttle will be provided between the Novotel Rotorua Lakeside Hotel, Redwoods Treewalk and Eastwood Café.

Dress is smart casual. This event will proceed regardless of weather, so plan accordingly.

A ticket to this event is included in any full registration. Guest tickets are $125 plus GST and include dinner and drinks.

ACE Awards gala dinner

Friday 2 September
5.30-11pm 
Skyline Rotorua

Getting there - buses depart the Novotel Lakeside Hotel at 5.30 and 5.40pm. 

Programme begins at 6.45pm and conclude by 10.30pm 

The ACE Awards recognise the excellent consulting that shapes all our futures, from national policies to sustainable communities to technological innovations. The gala dinner showcases the best of the best as we celebrate winners of the ACE Awards, Emerging Leader Award, Student Award and President’s Award.

This year’s venue, Skyline Rotorua, sits atop Mount Ngongotaha providing unsurpassed views of this special city. Access is via gondola ride, so if you have a fear of heights let us know when you book your ticket, so we can arrange alternative transport.

Dress is semi-formal (suit, tuxedo or cocktail attire).

A ticket to this event is included in any full registration. Guest tickets are $185 plus GST and include a three-course meal and drinks.
